On Thursday, 19th August NERF held its first meeting on Elluminate. This was basically an informal meeting just to try out the system. The idea is that if it works, it gives us the possibility of having a part of our online meetings where everybody is together and can talk to each other in real time. This is good as it cuts across feelings of isolation and helps those of us working away on our own to get together with others and exchange ideas and be inspired by the rest.

A Bit of Good News for E U Students

Good news from the OUSA website:

"Those student reps who sit on Uni committees are used to references to periodic reviews appearing in papers and reports – but we’re not used to such a reference bringing good news on fees – especially to our E U students resident outside the UK, including those resident in the Republic of Ireland.

OUSA has just learned that as a result of “periodically reviewing its fees to ensure that they are aligned to the market, compare reasonably with competitors and are in compliance with current legislation” the Uni has found that it should be charging “slightly lower fees to E U students resident outside the UK”.

Interesting article in "die Zeit" about the Bafög

The German newspaper "Die Zeit" published an article about the situation of German OU students and Bafög (financial aid in accordance with the Federal Education and Trainings Assistance Act): Durchgefallen (Failed).
According to the current legal status, German OU students won't receive Bafög, even if they fullfil all other requirements. Another article about the current situation was printed 14th September 2009 in the Süddeutschen Zeitung: Im Nirgendwo zwischen In- und Ausland (Somewhere in between home and foreign country).

OUSA IN NORTHERN EUROPE ('NERF')MEETING 4 OF 2010

FRIDAY 18TH JUNE to FRIDAY 9 JULY

We are writing to invite you to OUSA in Northern Europe's 4th meeting of 2010. A draft agenda is attached below our signatures.

You may already have got a newsletter about this meeting - there are some last minute changes as set out below.

Meeting 4 will take place in two venues. First Class will act as the 'official' segment of the meeting. As you may know, OUSA is 'travelling round' Northern Europe on First Class this year - for the Summer meeting we are going to Sweden to celebrate the Northern Lights and so the meeting will take place in OUSA Sweden Branch Forum ('OUSA Br Sweden'). All OU students and staff are welcome to attend.
